Who Painted This #25 - The Answer

Early Spring Afternoon, Central Park by Willard Metcalf
Willard Metcalf was an American Landscape painter.  he was also one of the was one of the Ten American Painters who in 1897 seceded from the Society of American Artists.

You can see more of his work on Wikipaintings

I said there were some clues as to the subject matter of the painting in the painting itself.  In Metcalf's painting of Central Park, it's possible to see a small tree in blossom (somewhat obscured by the trees in the foreground); there are horses being ridden in the foreground and cars are being driven along the cream road.  In the background there are some very tall buildings.

Who guessed correct

Alastair Fraser was the first with the correct answer.  Much seems to depend on whether you guessed the location correctly in the first instance

Others who came up the right answer include:

  1. Diego Velazquez? Initially I thought Van Dyck, but the style isn't at all the same. I took various photos of Van Dyck's incomplete works at the Ashmolean in Oxford. The style just doesn't fit with the drawing. I'm plumbing for Velazquez on the flimsiest of evidence I know, but that upturned moustache caught my attention............the drawing style, paper surface also caught my attention. Hasn't got the same fluidity as his paintings, which I've always found odd. After all that I'm wrong aren't I lol?

  3. Robert - read the narrative about the window there you leave your comment. It says "COMMENTS DO NOT APPEAR STRAIGHT AWAY as comments are ALWAYS moderated"

  4. Also read the bit of the blog post where it says "PLEASE make sure you read the rules before posting a comment - and ONLY POST ON THIS BLOG what you think is the answer."

The link in that sentence leads to this page http://makingamark.blogspot.co.uk/p/who-painted-this.html and this statement

"Leave your answer as a comment on this blog. (IF CORRECT IT WILL NOT BE PUBLISHED until just before the next challenge)
    * You can leave a guess - and if I don't publish the name you know you're on the right lines even if you don't yet have all the details
    * Howls of frustration can also be left while you try and work it out.......
    * I'll also publish the wrong answers!"

  5. Gian Lorenzo Bernini
    Portrait of Man with Mustache
    Self Portrait
    Chalk on paper
    Completed 1630
    Gallery Ashmolean Museum, Oxford UK
Also initially thought Velazquez. Then searched portraits of young men with mustaches. I recognized the nose on a Bernini portrait. Searched Bernini drawings and there it was.

  7. Portrait of Man with a Moustache
    supposed self portrait
    Artist: Gian Lorenzo Bernini
    Completion Date: c.1630
    Chalk on paper
    Dimensions: 21.5 x 27.5 cm
    Gallery: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK
When I first see what you have chosen I think 'Oh no, I will never get this one.'
I thought Velasquez to start with but could only find a self portrait in oils.
I thought it was an artist's self portrait, don't know why.
Tried googling pencil drawing, etching, aquatint, self portrait young man and ruled out Degas and several others, most had curlier hair. Gave up on self portrait and googled portrait young man etching and found the image on a blogpost called Old Portraits of Young Men. Armed with the name I got the rest from wikipaintings.

  8. I was sure it was Delacroix, but in frustration Googled "black chalk drawing of man with mustache" and came up with on a Blog called Male Beauty, lol:
    Self Portrait
    Gian Lorenzo Bernini
    c. 1635
Red and black chalk heightened with white
    18.5 cm X 25 cm
    Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK

  9. Portrait of a Man with a Moustache
    (supposed self-portrait)
    By Gian Lorenzo Bernini
    1630
Red and black chalk with white on pale brown paper.
In the Ashmolean museum, Oxford, UK.

I had seen the portrait before and thought it was either a self portrait or of a literary figure or arttist. I searched under Delacroix, Ingres, Byron, Goya portraits to no avail. Finally under Portrait of a Young man with a moustache, there he was - handsome and brilliant.

Thanks for the hugely informative blog, Katherine.

    Best Wishes, Joan.

  10. I bet I'm the last one to guess but this is a self portrait by Bernini; the reason I know is that he was pictured on italian liras banknotes. He was worth 50,000 of them !

It also must have seen this drawing at the Bernini show in the Galleria D'Arte Antica in Rome a few years ago. A great museum that many people don't visit.
I see this drawing resides in the Ashmolean.

there it was!, this weeks 'who painted this?' ; 0
Then I only had to verify the info, Thanks Deborah.

BTW it looks like she will be having an exhibition for it in March 2014 according to recent posts.
