Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013: Call for Entries

The UK's Largest & Longest Running Drawing Competition

On Monday this week, the 'Call for Entries' for The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 was published.
the Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence and exploring the boundaries of contemporary drawing practice within the UK.
It focuses on:
  • UK based artists - both emerging and more established artists
  • recognising the range and diversity in contemporary drawing practice
  • celebrating excellence in drawing as demonstrated by contemporary artists
It was established in 1994 to promote excellence in drawing practice in the UK and is now in its 19th year and is the largest and longest running OPEN Drawing Competition - and exhibition - in the UK.

Some people might be surprised by what the Competition counts as drawing. In 2010 I wrote a post about Contemporary Drawing Practice in response to some comments on this blog.

Details of the 'Call for Entries' are below - along with all the links to the relevant information you need if you would like to think about and/or enter one or more of your drawings in the competition.

Prizes 2013

For 2013, the prize fund totals £17,000.
  • First Prize:  £8,000,
  • Second Prize:  £5,000
  • Two student awards of £2,000 each.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning artists at a ceremony on Tuesday 10 September 2013.

Selectors for Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013

The selectors for this year's competition are all very well versed in contemporary drawing practice.  They will create an exhibition that explores and celebrates the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK.

They are:
  • Kate Brindley, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art mima. She has 20 years experience in the visual arts and museums sector with particular experience in working with 20th century art collections and capital developments.
  • Michael Craig-Martin RA, artist. He has been an influential teacher at Goldsmiths College London, and is considered a key figure in the emergence of the young British artists in the early 90s.
  • Charlotte Mullins, art critic, writer, broadcaster, and Editor of Art Quarterly (Some readers may have seen her in her role as a judge on the recent BBC2 art series Show Me the Monet ).

Who can enter?

This competition is open to students and established artists who draw - and who are resident or domiciled in the UK.  It's anticipated that over 2,000 artists will enter work this year.

'Domiciled' means 'permanent resident'. Last year I highlighted the legal definition of 'domiciled' for tax purposes.
Domicile is not the same as nationality or residence.  .....broadly speaking you have your domicile in the country that is your 'real' or permanent home which, if you have left, you intend to return to.
and
You are domiciled in the country where you have your permanent home. Domicile is different from nationality or residence.  You can only have one domicile at any given time.
HM Revenue and Customs - Domicile
So, people who are eligible to enter are:
  • the UK citizen who lives in the UK
  • if you're currently studying abroad but your permanent home is in the UK.
  • If you are a foreign national but you are now normally resident in the UK (eg have permission to stay; pay tax here)
What to enter
  • Only work made since January 2012 is eligible for entry
  • Artists can register to enter up to three drawings for consideration.
  • All work should be framed and there should be no hanging 'gear' on the back of the frame (to avoid damaging other artist' frames and artwork)
  • Composite works should be presented in a single frame
  • The maximum size of works accepted for submission is 2.5m in any dimension, including frame.
  • There is no restriction on the media which can used for a drawing eg video or film works are accepted - and indeed, the artist who won First Prize in 2012 used video
The nature of the exhibition is to generate debate about contemporary drawing practice and therefore work in any media is eligible for entry, if the artist considers it as drawing.

Registration

Deadline for entry

  • Deadline for online registration: 17 June 2013, 5pm

Forms

These are the relevant forms

Submission of work

  • Work can be submitted via the collections centres throughout the country, which in 2013 will be located in Aberystwyth, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Falmouth, Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Norwich.
  • Submission starts in Norwich on 20 June and finishes in London on Saturday 29 June 2013.
  • the ‘Submission & Collection Timetable’ details where and when to submit work. However Submission and Collection dates and times may be subject to change.

What does it cost?

  • The fees are on the high side and vary between handing in and are slightly more expensive if work is submitted via a regional submission centre.  This is because the latter includes the cost of transport - which to my mind is a very sensible arrangement as it avoids the vagaries of how much transport costs.
  • Examples:
    • hand in to London Submission Centre - Standard Entry: 1 work = £18;
    • hand in to Regional Submission Centre - Standard Entry: 1 work = £22

Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 Exhibition

It's expected that:
  • the competition will attract a submission of over 2,000 entries
  • the selectors will bring together between 50 and 70 works for the 2013 Exhibition a

The 2013 exhibition will be held at JVA at Jerwood Space, London from 11 September – 27 October 2013.

The exhibition will then tour to venues across the UK, including, for the first time, the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury Christ Church University in March 2014.
